Cisco Switching

Different types of switching, the idea of this page is to give you a brief description of 3 different types of switching they are store & forward, cut through and fragment free.

Store and forward switching
Store & forward switching reads an entire frame before forwarding it. The frame is also checked for error’s and is discarded if error’s are found.

Cutthrough switching
Cut through switching reads the begining of the frame up to the point of the MAC address thren forwarrds it without checking it for error’s. This reduces latency.

Fragment free
Fragment free switching just checks the frame for collisons before forwarding it

Switches reduce traffic and increase bandwidth.

Switches perform 2 basic operations

1, Switching data frames, this is the process by which a frame is received on an input medium snd then transmitted to an output medium.

2, Maintenance of switching operations where switches build and maintain switching tables and search for loops.

Switches operate at a much higher speed than bridges and can support new functionality such as virtual lans
